The Chicago Bar Association conducted its first ever International Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminar in Dublin, Ireland from March 14 through March 18, 2007. Daniel F. Gallagher, a shareholder in Querrey & Harrow’s Chicago office and member of the Board of Directors, was the event chair. The seminar drew approximately 100 attorneys and judges, including Judge William Bauer of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, Judge Jesse Reyes, President of the Illinois Judges Association, Judge Denise O’Malley of the Illinois Appellate Court as well as Patrick Fitzgerald, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Michael Madigan, Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, and Anita Alvarez, Chief Deputy State’s Attorney of Cook County.
The CLE seminar covered a variety of topics with an international flavor including the globalization of the practice of law. In his presentation, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald emphasized the international focus that criminal law has taken in light of the rise in terrorism and the influence of the internet in money laundering. There were also presentations relating to international banking, international mediation and arbitration, and the burgeoning international practice of intellectual property and technology transfer law. Querrey & Harrow was well represented at the seminar. Among the attendees were Larry Kowalczyk, Terry Guolee and Daniel Kirk, all partners in Querrey & Harrow’s Chicago office.
On Friday, March 16, 2007, the King’s Inns of Court feted the Chicago lawyers to a dinner held in its Georgian style Dublin headquarters which was constructed in approximately 1780. It was a spectacular venue for dinner and the program included addresses by Paul O’Connor, the Dean of the University of College Dublin, School of Law, Hugh O’Flaherty, former Justice of the Supreme Court of Ireland, and Eugene McCague, former President of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce.
