The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) has organized an event for elementary school children to bring an awareness of and promote interest in the trades. The Block-Kids Building Program is sponsored on the local level by NAWIC chapters and other organizations.
The event involves a timed challenge for the children, who are divided into groups and given a set of “tools.” The children use their imaginations to construct almost anything (other than a person, vehicle, or equipment). The "tools" they are provided include blueprint pages, hard hats, building blocks, string, a rock, and a piece of aluminum foil. The children are informed about the different areas of construction and their goal to make a unique structure. Judges discuss the different aspects of the construction site with the children during the competition.
Querrey & Harrow will provide hardhats for the kids participating in the event organized through the Lake/McHenry County Chapter of NAWIC. Last year, approximately 500 children participated in the event session in the Fox Lake/Roundlake area in northern Illinois.
